Namcheon Cathedral Parish was founded in 1979. The present cathedral church was completed and consecrated in 1992, and it has served as the Cathedral Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Busan.
As a cathedral parish, Namcheon is more than one local parish church. It is a central church where diocesan liturgies, prayer, and major gatherings of the Church in Busan have taken place.
The cathedral's diagonal triangular form recalls the sail of Busan, a port city open to the sea. The bell tower beside the church rises like a key pointing toward heaven.
Outside, the building reflects the city and the sea. Inside, the slanted space and quiet light invite visitors into prayer and silence.
One of the most memorable features of the Main Cathedral is the large blue-toned stained-glass wall. The light changes with the time of day and the weather, giving the cathedral a prayerful atmosphere.
The stained glass is not only decoration. It helps the whole sacred space become a place of prayer and contemplation.
The patron saint of Namcheon Cathedral Parish is Saint Paul Jeong Ha-sang.
Saint Paul Jeong Ha-sang was a Korean lay Catholic leader and martyr. His witness reminds visitors that the beauty of this cathedral is also rooted in the faith of the Korean martyrs.
He was martyred on September 22, 1839, and was canonized with the Korean Martyrs by Pope John Paul II on May 6, 1984.
The beauty of Namcheon Cathedral Parish is completed by the people who pray here. Mass, the Rosary at the Marian Shrine, Eucharistic adoration, confession, parish celebrations, and diocesan events have all built up the life of faith in this place.
As the Cathedral Parish of the Diocese of Busan, Namcheon continues to hold the faith of the diocese and share the light of the Gospel through prayer and service.
